Is it too early for Christmas decorations? Some say yes, some say no! So when is the best time to put up the decorations? This is just MY opinion, but here goes anyway!
I absolutely love the whole Christmas season! From the decorations to Christmas carols, to baking cookies and exchanging gifts, and even the shopping and wrapping! I love it all! In fact, it is my favorite holiday, followed by Halloween, then Thanksgiving! I know what you’re thinking, because I thought of it when I wrote it….what a contradiction in favorites…Christmas and Halloween.
I like Halloween because of costumes and the imagination that gets put in to coming up with them! The decorations can be fun, too, depending on how you look at it! I don’t think of death or zombies, and I’m not wild about the gory designs. I guess I think of Halloween more as a fun time for kids, than anything else!
But back to Christmas decorations! I love seeing all the lights, the colors, the smell of pine, and of course, fresh baked cookies!
When is too early?
For me, personally, too early is doing it before Halloween! And I use to feel that way about Thanksgiving, too. But that feeling changed a few years back! I was a little discouraged because I didn’t have the time or energy to decorate! Working a full time job, getting up early to get there, and getting back home late…..I’m talking 4 a.m. wake up time, and getting home around 5 p.m. By the time I got dinner made and cleaned up, I was too tired to do anything else, not to mention needing to get up early the next day.
When I found I finally had time, it was 2 weeks before Christmas, and I was in a downward trend of depression and anxiety, thinking of everything that needed done, and not having time or energy, and I really didn’t want to bother! I did, of course, but I grumbled the whole time! Why do I bother! What’s the use! No one cares anyway, why should I? When no one sees it except for us, why should I even care!
Then Grand-kids came in to my life! When they walked in, and their eyes lit up with excitement, I knew why I did it! The joy they expressed and the amazement of each thing they discovered, made me KNOW why I decorated at all!
So when IS a good time?
Of course, that’s completely up to each person and their circumstances. If I still bought a real tree, then I would hold off until after Thanksgiving. Only because of dealing with pine needles, and remembering to keep it watered.
Now that I use artificial…..which is mainly for the convenience and not because I prefer it, I put everything up the week BEFORE Thanksgiving! I enjoy looking at the tree, and all of the other decorations. Since it takes so much time to do it, why not have it out long enough to get some pleasure out of it?!?!?!
Use your own judgement, and don’t let others influence you! If you want to do it now, then do it! Don’t want to at all? Then don’t!
I see the same things on social media, about waiting until after Thanksgiving, to give it it’s own due. My tree may be up and ready before, but I still celebrate Thanksgiving for what it is…..a time for being grateful, a time for family, and of course….the food! But then I know when it’s over, I’m ready for Christmas, and i DON”T have to wonder when I’m going to find time to do the decorating…..and baking….and shopping….and wrapping….. I at least have one of those things out of the way!
So after the meal is done, and we’re sitting around looking at the Black Friday sale papers, I can enjoy my decorations and be thankful that I have one thing checked off my list! So I can move on to getting more out in this blog, and working my small businesses! Yes, I said businesses, plural! See why I put my decorations out early?!
